The Routine Linen

Everyday linen

“Life is but a tissue of habits.”

— Henri-Frédéric Amiel

If we believe that, we can change our life by changing our habits. And I think that good habits are about having a good routine in our daily life. In this blog, I would like to introduce our products as things to accompany such a good daily routine.

THE LINEN SHEETS MADE TO ORDER

Now, we would like to introduce our linen sheets. The most pleasant thing about linen is its texture. It is smooth and does not cling to the skin. I think it is the best material for the sweaty summer season. The secret is derived from the flax plant.

This is the flax flower.

Flax for fiber grows taller than a person's waist length. And it grows straight up to the sky. No wonder it makes beautiful yarn.

THE PLANT YARN

Linen yarn is made from the fiber inside the stem of this plant. Because it is located inside the stem, the outer bark of the stem must first be removed. Since this cannot be done by our hands, the harvested flax is laid down in the field and allowed to decompose by bacteria and fungi to extract the fiber from within.

Flax after dew retting

Dew retting is a process in which flax is laid out neatly in the growing area and the epidermis of the stalks is fermented and corroded by morning dew, rain, and microorganisms in the soil. This makes it easier to extract the fiber.

And this is the bundle of fibers taken out from the stem, which is called sliver. This sliver was imported from Belgium. By the way, the process up to this point is called flax. Therefore, the process after this is called linen.

Thus, a plant yarn, linen, is produced.

You can see that the raw color of linen is the color of the dead grass of the plant. The white ones are exposed to it.

 COEXISTENCE WITH PLANTS

At Tenjin-factory, we make sheets using linen, which is such a plant yarn.

First, let me explain the advantages of textiles made from vegetable yarn linen.

(1) Breathable

(2) Lint-free (Lint : fiber waste or dust)

(3) High water absorbency

(4) High moisture absorbency

(5) Quick-drying

There are the characteristics of linen sheets below.

I. The easy wrinkling of linen sheets allows for better ventilation and quick drying of perspiration during sleep.

II. Dust and debris from linen fibers are known not to cause skin allergies.

III. IV. Absorption of water and moisture makes it cool to the touch.

V. Moisture easily evaporates, and when it does, it takes away heat, making it less susceptible to dampness.

In other words, linen sheets offer various invisible conveniences to suit the condition of the sleeper.

DETAIL

Here is what Tenjin-factory's sheets are like.

First of all, since it is made to order, it is made according to the thickness of your mattress. We can accommodate various mattress thicknesses.

Next, select the fabric for the top surface, the part where people actually sleep. This part is easily rubbed by friction with people, and even strong linen can quickly tear and develop holes depending on how it is used.

Therefore, Tenjin-factory used a two-twisted yarn for this part to increase the durability as much as possible, and also increased the density to make it stronger. It is as if strong rugger men were huddled together in a scrum.

The top surface is selected from the four colors above.

Continue by selecting the fabric that covers two side surfaces of the mattress. Since friction is not a concern here,  a thin type of fabric is used. This will also reduce the weight of the mattress.

Side surfaces are available in the 20 colors listed above.

Here is the example of combinations.

So, it is the sewing method that is of concern. In single to double sizes, the top surface is
made from a single piece of fabric. However, for queen and king sizes, the top surface is made from two pieces of fabric sewn together.

Single to double sizes are made with a single piece of fabric for the top surface.

The top surfaces of the queen and king sizes are two pieces sewn together.

We use a sewing method that minimizes the steps.

All sizes can be made in two types: flat sheets and fitted sheets.

NOSTALGIC CLOTH

Finally, we are talking about fabric making. Tenjin-factory is a linen weaving factory, so our focus is on the fabric itself.

And our fabrics are woven by shuttle looms. Although they are old-fashioned, the cloth have the same selvedge specifications as antique linen, making it durable and long-lasting.

The weft is placed in a tool called a shuttle. The shuttle runs through the warp and places the weft. Whenever the weft runs out, it is replenished by hand. It is a joint effort by man and machine.

Both ends of a fabric is called selvage or selvedge. Except for hand weaving, it can only be made by an old-fashioned shuttle loom. The charm of cloth woven by this loom is that it can be woven without putting a load on the threads, resulting in cloth that retains more softness.

Finally, a piece of linen in the daily routine.

That's all for now. Thank you for reading until the end. We hope that Tenjin Factory's " Custom made linen sheets " will be useful to you. We will continue to communicate the appeal of linen products that are close to your daily lives.

THE ROUTINE LINEN ( 1 )

“Life is but a tissue of habits.”

— Henri-Frédéric Amiel

If we believe that, we can change our life by changing our habits. And I think that good habits are about having a good routine in our daily life. In this blog, I would like to introduce our products as things to accompany such a good daily routine.

This time, I'd like to introduce a Jacquard  woven double gauze blanket. This blanket is large enough to be used in bed. It is thin and light, and can be easily washed, making it ideal for cooling down on hot summer days. In other seasons, you can use this convenient blanket as a cover over a quilt to decorate your bedroom.

Let's look at the details first.

These are  the top and bottom ends of the blanket  - the head side and the foot side. The plain weave is rolled in to define the edges. The red line for one thread is a particular feature.

This is the 3.55"(9cm) length hem of waffle weave adjacent to the edge above. The waffle weave is wrapped and sewn here, so it is thick and stable, but soft and pleasant to the touch.

This is the double portion of the waffle weave. The double layer creates a soft layer of air.

This is a double satin weave. Satin is originally a very soft weave. The double weave makes it even softer. Also there is air inside.

It's a little hard to see, but this is the part where the device to weave weft yarns densely is activated, called "winding stop". The difference in shrinkage between the densely woven part and the non-densely woven part is used to create fine wrinkles and a three-dimensional effect. This area is also based on satin.

Next, let's talk about the materials used.

The warp is made of cotton. And it is processed by the TZ acidic enzyme method to make it white and water absorbent.
The TZ acidic enzyme process is a human- and environment-friendly process that involves scouring and bleaching with natural enzymes and acids of the level used for cooking.

A human hair is said to be about 50 denier (a unit of thread thickness), so we can say that this cotton thread is roughly the thickness of two hairs.

About weft yarn.

The weft is made of yarn spun from flax grown in Europe. Although flax can be grown in Japan, the climate and terroir of Europe seem to be more suitable for extracting its fibers.

Then, about Jacquard.
This is a special device used in textile making. It can be used to weave a variety of patterns. The patterns on this blanket and the various double weaves mentioned above were made on a loom equipped with this device.
This is "Jacquard".

The bottom side looks like this. The strings you see are not warp threads. It is a string used to raise and lower the warp. There are specialized craftsmen to install them.

Finishing by human hands

Up to this point, we have been looking at processes that are performed rather by machines. The cloth made by running machines is always turned into a finished product by human hands in order to make it into a product. This is the case with all Teniin-factory's products.

Each step of the process, from cutting, sewing, washing, brushing, ironing, to the final inspection, is always done by hand and with the eyes.

Finally, a piece of linen in the daily routine

That's all for now. Thank you for reading until the end. We hope that Tenjin Factory's "Jacquard Double Gauze Blanket" will be useful to you. We will continue to communicate the appeal of linen products that are close to your daily lives.
