THE ROUTINE LINEN ( 11 )

“Life is but a tissue of habits.”

— Henri-Frédéric Amiel

If we believe that, we can change our life by changing our habits. And I think that good habits are about having a good routine in our daily life. In this blog, I would like to introduce our products as things to accompany such a good daily routine.

Linen Towel

Now, we would like to introduce linen towels.

  Fascinated by antique linens

Tenjin-factory began weaving linen fabrics because of its fascination with antique linens. We also make towels on shuttle looms that can weave the iconic selvedge.
Note: Some towels are made on looms that cannot have selvedge.

Selvedge is a proof of the same specifications as antique

Selvedge linen, which can only be made on a shuttle loom, is produced in the same way as antique linen.

The both edges of the woven cloth are selvedges. Threads do not fall out without sewing.

The more you use Tenjin-factory towels, the closer they get to the appearance of antique linen. We hope that they will eventually become real antiques.

Towels without pile

When you think of towels, the first thing that comes to mind is fabric with pile. Towels with pile have become that common.
However, there are towels without pile.
That is linen towels.

Above is a waffle weave towel.

Plain weave towels below.

Both are towels, but without pile. Even without pile, they can be used as towels. The secret lies in the material, linen. Now, let us move on to the explanation of linen.

Natural water absorption

Linen is a yarn made from the fibers within the stem of the flax plant.

Flax field.

A bundle of flax fibers. They appear to absorb moisture easily. The material is also smooth, easy to dry, and does not cling.

The fibers that make up linen are made of a material that is easily wetted by water because they are responsible for moving water upward toward the leaves and flowers. In addition, inside the fiber are hollow pores called lumens. These are responsible for the absorbency of the towel when it is turned into a towel.

In addition, flax fiber has high wicking properties, which allows absorbed moisture to dissipate easily into the air. This is the reason why linen towels dry so quickly.

Thus, linen is naturally absorbent and quick-drying without any chemical treatment. It can be said that linen is very safe because it is a towel that makes use of natural materials as they are.

The stalks become thread and the seeds become linseed oil. With all of its uses, flax is often referred to as the superior agricultural crop.

Features of linen towels without pile

Let's take a look at the characteristics of linen towels made from linen yarn.

Ⅰ.

First is the speed of water absorption.
Just by pressing it against moisture, it absorbs it quickly. No need to scrub the skin.

Linen towels that are gentle to the skin.

Ⅱ.

Second is the speed of drying.
Linen is naturally absorbent and quick-drying. Also, the absence of pile makes the cloth breathable. The above factors result in faster drying.

It dries quickly even when room-dried.

Ⅲ.

Third is nice texture.
Unlike cotton, linen is not sticky and does not cling to the skin. This feel is especially pleasant in the summer.

Pleasant linen's unique texture.

Ⅳ.

The fourth is that the more you use linen towels, the softer the texture changes.
Cleaning with detergent can cause a decrease in water absorbency and stiffness as residue builds up. With proper care, the more linen towels is washed and used, the more the fibers will unravel and the softer they will become.

Ⅴ.

Fifth is ease of storage.
As we have seen, linen has a natural ability to absorb water. As a result, the cloth can be made thinner. Even when stacked, they do not become so thick that they are easy to store.

Four bath towels are this thickness.

Ⅵ.

Sixth is that they can be used for a long time.
In Europe, antique and vintage linen products are sold in antique stores, saying that the older they are, the more valuable they are. This is why linen is such a wonderful fabric product that has always fascinated people.
